Since Roxanne and I opened the store in 1999, the Yorkie has been a very good seller.
Almost every day potential customers come into the store hoping to find a Yorkie. And often, we get a lot of phone calls from people asking if we have a Yorkie to sell. Of the Pure Breed puppies we sell, the Yorkie has been the Number Two selling puppy at our store Utica Pet Supply LLC www.uticapet.com. I feel that if the price and availability of a Yorkie was the same as the Shih Tzu the Yorkie would most likely be the number one selling puppy at Utica Pet Supply.
Roxanne and I have one male and one female Yorkie among our group of personal family pets. We have had them a very long time so a lot of things we offer in this article are from the best source, personal experience.
The Yorkie is a very affectionate breed; they do seem to have a habit of picking one of the family members and making them their personal favorite. For example in our home, the female Yorkie favors me while the male Yorkie favors my wife.
Yorkies do like to play and they really like to go for walks. When we would go camping when the kids were young those both our male and female Yorkie of ours would walk around that campground till we couldn’t take it anymore. So if you would like to buy a puppy that likes to walk, the Yorkie definitely is a good choice.
The Yorkie is a very unique dog in the Toy Breed class that truly loves to play and go on walks but has a very low requirement for exercise so that makes the Yorkie a great indoor dog. So when the weather isn’t so great you don’t have to be concerned about taking your Yorkie for a walk. And just so you know, your Yorkie will not like to go outside if the weather isn’t favorable.
One thing to keep in mind about the Yorkie breed is that while they love to go outside and play and walk they are not always good around other dogs they do not know. For example, you should always have them on a lead using a body harness (never a collar) if you are in a public place. The reason for this is the Yorkie is very domineering and alpha. Sometimes the Yorkie will pick a fight with a dog that it does not know if it feels the other dog is invading its personal space. I’m not suggesting that the Yorkie as a breed are vicious; they just are a breed that requires close supervision around other dogs that are a first time interaction.
You can have extended family over to the house for a visit and they can bring their dog and after a few visits the Yorkie is use to them and there is no problem. My daughter brings her Shih Tzu over to our home often and our male and female Yorkie are fine with her puppy.
If you would like to have a puppy that will be your best buddy the Yorkie will do that. They will follow you around the house all day where ever you go. And when you sit down they will sit with you or by you.
While affectionate, the Yorkie as a breed sometimes are stubborn and in some cases very sneaky. Yorkies are curious, so if you have something they shouldn’t be getting into (like holiday candy on an end table) don’t leave it there or they will get into it.
The Yorkie overall is a good companion animal, but like all Pure Breed dogs you need to understand the traits of the breed and then you can make a decision if it would be a good fit for your family.
In reading some history on the Yorkie I found that it was originally a ratter, also that it varied in size considerably prior to 1900. After that time the effort to breed a smaller Yorkie succeeded and brought us to where we are today with the accepted breed standard being 7 pounds or less with a height of 8-9 inches.
Also, the Yorkie has a non-shedding luxurious coat that should be combed often.
As with a lot of the smaller terrier breeds the Yorkie is a great watch dog and does bark. So if you don’t like barking, the Yorkie may not be the best choice for you.
Overall this is a hearty dog with an anticipated life span of 14-16 years.
The Yorkshire Terrier often called the Yorkie is a Purebred Dog and recognized by the FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, & ANKC.
Many families with children inquire about purchasing a Yorkie and with younger children we suggest they also consider the Designer Dog called the Yorkie-Poo. Utica Pet Supply: THE SHIH TZU

The Shih Tzu has been a great seller for us since we opened our store in 1999. It is so popular that our records indicate that to date (July-2010) the Shih Tzu is the Number One selling Pure Breed puppy at Utica Pet Supply LLC www.uticapet.com.
The Shih Tzu has a luxurious coat that is long and silky. Shih Tzu puppies come in a full range of beautiful colors.
The Shih Tzu is in the Toy Group of dogs and the normal weight for a Shih Tzu is 9-16 pounds. From time to time you could see a Shih Tzu that is less than 9 pounds as an adult and that would be fine. Also, you could see an adult Shih Tzu that is over 16 pounds and that is ok also.
The height on the Shih Tzu ranges from 8-11 inches.
In researching the history of this breed I found that it originated in China and Tibet and had the function of a lap dog. Also, the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso were simply called the Apso until 1934. After that time they were referred to as two separate breeds. The Shih Tzu enjoyed rising popularity in the United States in the 1960s and was recognized by AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1969.
The Shih Tzu has a good energy level so we do recommend it for families with kids. This is a very playful and affectionate dog so it makes for a very good companion.
We promote the Shih Tzu as an indoor dog as its coat is non-shedding. And while all dogs require some exercise every day, the Shih Tzu has a lower exercise requirement and one good vigorous play session daily should do it.
The Shih Tzu has a great temperament toward other pets and people so if family or friends visit with their puppy that works well. Also, first time visitors to your home will be welcomed by the Shih Tzu.
While most authors state that the Shih Tzu is more difficult to train, I am in the middle on that one. My daughter Erin who has her own apartment took home a Shih Tzu (Male) that she named Timmy. This Shih Tzu comes over my home almost every Sunday and it is by far one of the smartest Shih Tzus I have ever seen. My opinion on this now leans more toward the trainer of the puppy is a far greater influencing factor, than the breed of dog being easier or harder to train.
Overall, Roxanne and I give a thumbs up in recommending the Shih Tzu for you and your family as one of the great dogs to get when you are considering a purchase of a new puppy!
Overall this is a hearty dog with an anticipated life span of 11-14 years.
