The Chihuahua has been a great seller for us since we opened our store in 1999.  It is so popular that the Chihuahua is the Number Three selling Pure Breed Toy Puppy at Utica Pet Supply LLC www.uticapet.com.

This popular puppy is well known for its small size, while normally less than 6 pounds, 1-6 pounds is the norm, making the Chihuahua the smallest breed of dog.

So, if you have children and are considering purchasing a Chihuahua, please consider other breeds also, that will offer more durability and be able to embrace the activity of the children in your household.

In addition to being the smallest dog the Chihuahua is one of the shortest ranging from 6-9”.

The Chihuahua also entertains any and all colors, and has two basic coat types, short and long.

Short, seeming to be the most prominent at birth.

While small in size, the Chihuahua is very energetic, so playtime will always be a lot of fun.

While all dogs require exercise, the Chihuahua requires a very low amount of exercise, which not only makes this a great indoor dog, but also a lower maintenance dog.

Chihuahuas make good companion dogs as they like to sit with you or on you.  But before purchasing a Chihuahua understand that this dog is more of a one person dog and may not always be as affectionate toward other family members as they are toward you if you are the primary care giver.  Also, keep in mind that Chihuahuas are not friendly toward strangers.  Another consideration is training a Chihuahua can sometimes be difficult.

While Roxanne and I have sold families with younger children Chihuahuas, they were bigger as puppies that would have leaned more toward the 6 pound size as adults.  And some families with younger kids have done well with this dog, but overall are general recommendation would be families with older children.  This would especially hold true if you are considering purchasing a Chihuahua that is 1-2 pounds at 8-10 weeks of age.

In studying the history of the Chihuahua I have read that the area of origin is Mexico with possible ties to other areas that can not be confirmed or ruled out.

But at the end of the day, everyone who comes in the store enjoys holding and playing with the smallest dog there is, The Chihuahua.

Overall the Chihuahua is a hearty dog with an anticipated life span of 14-18 years.

The Chihuahua is a Purebred Dog and recognized by the FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, & ANKC.
