The Cockapoo is a Designer Dog that is the breeding of the American Cocker Spaniel and Poodle.  While Cockers normally weigh 24-28 pounds, Poodles can be toy to standard in size, so the weight on a Poodle can vary from under 10 pounds up to 45-70 pounds on a Standard Poodle.  While the size on a Cockapoo can vary our experience has shown that there are two weight classes for the Cockapoo, up to 15 pounds and 15-25 pounds.  Of course with all dogs there can be variations on weight higher or lower when compared to a recognized or commonly acceptable weight standard.

When considering the height of an American Cocker Spaniel they will be 14-15 inches at the withers (where the line of the back meets the neckline), while Poodles can exceed 15 inches.  For the Cockapoo a height up to 15 inches at the withers is common.

While all puppies are active, the Cockapoo will settle down well into the routine of the household.  While all puppies and dogs require exercise the Cockapoo can do very well as an indoor dog but is affectionate and likes to play.  Also, the Cockapoo likes to go on walks.

Along with its lustrous coat that compliments its good looks, the Cockapoo is a non-shedding dog that also is considered by many to be a hypoallergenic dog.  As Designer Dogs go, we feel that the Cockapoo is most likely the most popular and well know of the Designer Dogs that are available today.  You might even go as far to say that the Cockapoo is the grandfather of Designer Dogs.

While there are many Designer Dogs available the Cockapoo offers a good temperament with a proven track record of being a great family dog.  When considering all the benefits this Designer Dog offers a Cockapoo is a great dog to consider when looking for a family pet.

The Cockapoo is also a more cost effective dog to own because it is a smaller dog so it will cost less to feed and cost less to groom as a smaller non-shedder.  As with all Designer Dogs there should be less illness and problems surrounding congenital defects as these types of dogs are out bred as opposed to inbreeding that is common on pedigree dogs.

Both the Cocker (American) and the Poodle have a life span of 12-15 years, so on average you should expect similar with the Cockapoo.

Authors Note Regarding Breeding of the Cockapoo

The breeding of a Cockapoo to a Cockapoo is not considered by us to be a true Cockapoo since it is not bred from The American Cocker Spaniel & Poodle.  At Utica Pet we only recognize 1st generation (The American Cocker Spaniel bred to a Poodle) to be a true Cockapoo.
