For the last thirteen years or so, it seems like the popularity of the hybrid puppy or dog has been growing substantially. Is it all hype, or is there some reason these newer types of pups are so popular? The truth is there are many good reasons to also consider a hybrid puppy, also referred to as a Designer Dog.
So first, let’s take a look at what a hybrid dog is and how it gets there. A hybrid dog is the first generation breeding of two purebred breeds. One example would be, breeding a pure Cocker Spaniel to a pure Poodle results in the Designer Dog known as the Cock-A-Poo. In the majority of cases, the name given to the Designer Dog easily illustrates what it is.
Hybrid dogs are referred to often as Designer Dogs because they are bred by design. By intentionally breeding two pure dogs for a desired outcome that can sometimes offer a variety of desirable characteristics. One reason this is done is to have a dog with a hypoallergenic coat, such as breeding a Poodle with another type of dog.
If the breeder who is breeding the Designer Dog is conscientious and keeps the highest possible standards using only healthy parents, the outcome is very rewarding. A Designer Dog can in a lot of cases be stronger and healthier as well as having good genetic health. While some people like female dogs or vice versa, one gender of Designer Dog is not superior in any way to the other. It is simply just a matter of personal preference.
While these dogs are small and cute the pricing in some cases can be higher than a pure breed dog. There are a variety of factors that affect the price of a Designer Dog. One can be the popularity of the Designer Dog while another can simply be a really small Designer Dog. Since a breeder’s cost for the most part is the same from month to month, breeding smaller Designer Dogs is more costly than breeding bigger types of Designer Dogs. Smaller Designer Dogs come from small parents that have small litters, while bigger Designer Dogs come from bigger parents that have bigger litters. One example to offer would be a litter of Golden-Doodles that could have maybe ten or more in the litter compared to a litter of three or four Yorkie-Poos. So the breeder would have to charge more for the Yorkie-Poos because the cost of breeding is higher per puppy in the smaller litter.
There are a lot of things to consider when you wish to buy a Designer Dog. Ask the seller based on your exact family dynamic if the Designer Dog you a considering is a good fit. If you explain your family dynamic and are offered a Designer Dog ask why it is a good fit for your family. All honest, knowledgeable, seasoned pet professionals have many years of experience and will be very helpful in explaining why one Designer Dog or several types of Designer Dogs would be a good fit for you!
While buying a Designer Dog is fun and exciting don’t get completely caught up in the moment. Ask questions so that you completely understand what Veterinarian examined the puppy and when. Additionally the seller should be able to fully explain what vaccinations have been given or needed in the future. When considering a purchase of a Designer Dog buying from an established pet store or breeder will increase your chances of having a good experience. I would recommend that you receive complete documentation for vaccinations, veterinarian examinations, and any guaranties offered with your purchase, with these things in mind have fun purchasing your next puppy that might just be a Designer Dog.
